Leadership and Collaboration

The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner incorporatingculturegrowth, and to advance the profession.

My work:

As part of my Classroom Management coursework, I wrote a letter to caregivers of students in order to explain the rules and expectations of the classroom.  The letter uses basic language so that it is clearly understandable for caregivers and is also kept at an appropriate length for easy reading.  I believe it is important to communicate with caregivers so that they know they are partners in their student’s learning; without caregiver support, students have a much harder time succeeding.

To receive honors credit for my Early Literacy course, I taught a series of three lessons to my peers about teaching English Language Learners (ELLs).  Since most of my peers will be general classroom teachers, I wanted to help them understand specific challenges and suggestions for teaching ELLs, working with parents of ELLs, and also working with ELL teachers in the general classroom context.   The information for each presentation was gathered from scholarly sources as well as email interviews of three ELL teachers in two school districts.  I created a basic outline on each lesson to give to my peers, as well, as a resource for the future. At the end of the lesson, I asked my classmates to break into four groups to work on the case studies I wrote for ELLs; they were asked to think about possible reasons for each student’s behavior and what they could do to help the student.

After these lessons, I received very positive feedback from my peers, who noted that this information was very useful to them and they appreciated that it was targeted to them as classroom teachers.

The first lesson I taught was about working with ELL students and included an explanation of some struggles that ELL students face, some technical terms, and suggestions for working with ELLs in a general classroom setting.  The lesson, class notes, and case studies I created are below.
